Become A Mentor

As a volunteer with Kids Central’s Mentoring Program, you can make a positive difference in the life of a young person in the foster care system. Mentors offer guidance and support to local youth on their path to adulthood. Studies show that kids with engaged mentors have a greater chance of enrolling in college or trade schools – and a much lower chance of using illegal drugs. Mentorship offers a wonderful way for members of our community to help foster youth even if they do not feel called to become foster parents.

More About Mentorship

The Kids Central Mentoring Program involves these commitments and opportunities:

  • Background Check: Like all Kids Central volunteers who have one-to-one contact with children, mentors must pass a background check.
  • Commitment: We ask for a one-year commitment to the assigned relationship to allow time to build trust. (We will work with partial-year residents to accommodate your availability.)
  • Involvement: During the mentorship, mentors generally have phone or video contact weekly, plus in-person meetings twice a month. Typical outings include dining at a restaurant or visiting a nature park or museum. (Mentors cover the cost of outings.)
  • Feedback: Mentors and mentees alike give regular feedback to Kids Central to ensure the relationship is working well.
  • Support from Kids Central: Mentors receive the assistance needed to succeed, including an orientation, clear goals for the relationship, coaching, accessible resources, and more.
